What Is Aikido?
Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art. The purpose of Aikido, however, is not to make you a hero or to make you stronger or tougher than others; it is to make you a warrior for peace.
The founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, stated:
"I am not teaching you how to move your feet.
I am teaching you how to move your mind.
I am not teaching you martial arts.
I am teaching nonviolence."
Morihei Ueshiba recognized that the enemy is within; therefore, training in Aikido is training in the self. It is training to help one harmonize with others without compromising self.
"The goal of Aikido is not the defeat of others,
but the defeat of the negative characteristics
which inhibit one's own mind and inhibit its functioning."
In other words, Aikido teaches a commitment to peaceful resolution of conflict whenever possible and a commitment to self-improvement.
